Federal Work Study Program

A federal work study program enables a student with financial needs to work at part time jobs and get paid while doing their graduation or undergrad. A financial aid award letter lets you know if you are awarded federal work- study money.

How does a federal work-study program work?

If a student wants work- study then the procedure for it would be done through the school’s financial aid office. Once the work- study is granted, the student has to accept or decline the award on the financial aid letter.

Students doing part-time jobs by work-study program have to pay taxes on their income. Just like regular working people, the students doing part- time jobs also need to fill in tax forms and go through background checks. This step is of utmost importance. Hence it is essential to see the school’s work-study department in advance and complete all the necessary formalities before you start your job and get paid.

The students may get paid per hour or may get a salary depending upon the kind of job. Usually undergraduate students get paid per hour. The student should get at least minimum wage per hour. If your job involves certain skills then the pay would be more. This gives the student the chance to learn new skills and get experience for future employments.

The amount of money that a student can earn is limited to the amount granted in the award letter. Hence most students seek to take up jobs that would give them maximum financial benefits and also develop new skill sets for future. Also some on campus jobs come with bonus benefits of waivers in the tuition fee making them more attractive for the students.
